President Fukuhara, Consel General Shigeeda, Chancellor Apple, Dean Sutton, Board Chair Tsujimura, guests and friends,
I am very honored to join you for this happy occasion.

As Board Chair Tsujimura mentioned before, I agree that nowadays different cultures in the world are facing many difficulties to understand each other.

When students from Chuo University have the opportunity to come to Hawai’i to study, I would like you to not only study in class but also importantly to make friends.

I believe that learning how to make friends with those who grew up in different ways, is the best way to understand different cultures. Eventually, you will fully understand the message that was given before, that all people are wishing for the same things.

Also, please go out and look at the uniqueness of the society in Hawai’i. Compared to many other places, there is a perfect mix of different cultures. America is called a melting pot, but I do not think so. I graduated from the University of Chicago, so I remember looking at the society in Chicago and calling it a fruit salad, how everything was separately placed in one bowl. Here, you will find that Hawai’i is much closer to a melting pot. Especially coming from an isolated island like Japan, you can learn a very important lesson from here, on how to live together.

I am glad that Chuo University has invested in the opening of the Pacific office.

To all students, please tell your friends at Chuo your experiences, take advantage of this opportunity, make many friends, look at Hawaii’s society, and study hard!

福原学長、アップル総長、サットン学部長、ツジムラ理事長、そしてここにお集まりの皆さま。
この幸せな機会に、私も参加させていただけたことを大変誇りに思います。

ツジムラ理事長がお話しされたように、世界には様々な文化があり、互いに理解し合うのはとても難しい状況にあります。
ですから、学生の皆さんがハワイで学ぶ際には、勉強だけでなく、友人を作ることも大切にしてほしいと思います。

異なった環境で育った人々と友人になることは、異文化理解への一番の近道です。そこで初めて、これまでのメッセージ、つまり、人は皆同じことを望んでいるということをしっかりと理解することでしょう。

また、積極的に外に出て、ハワイ独自の社会を見てください。他のいろいろな場所と比較しても、異文化が完璧に融合していることがわかります。アメリカは“人種のるつぼ”だといわれていますが、私は必ずしもそうは思いません。私はシカゴ大学を卒業しましたが、シカゴの社会を見たとき、あらゆるものが一つの器に混在しているだけのように感じたのを覚えています。しかし、ハワイではそれぞれの人種や文化が混ざり合い、独特の文化を形成しており、まさに“人種のるつぼ”といえます。特に、日本のような島国から来ている方々にとって、ここで異なる文化的背景を持つ人々がいかに共存しているかを学ぶことはとても重要です。

私は、中央大学がパシフィックオフィスを開所したことを、中大卒業生の一人として嬉しく思います。
学生の皆さんには、ハワイでの経験を中央大学のご学友にお話しいただきたいと思います。そして、ぜひチャンスをものにしてください。たくさんの友人を作り、ハワイの社会を見て、しっかり学んでください。
