【中央大学パシフィックオフィス開所式】ハワイ大学マノア校トム・アップル総長挨拶（英語・日本語訳）

Aloha!

I would like to congratulate President Fukuhara on the opening of your Pacific office here in the East West Center.

I remember well signing the memorandum of understanding with you in the fall of 2012, only a month or two after arriving here at the University of Hawai’i.

I am absolutely delighted to see that in that short time we have accomplished so much and done almost everything that we had pledged to do in the memorandum.

We have had University of Hawai’i students in several disciplines visiting and studying at your great university, Chuo University. We have students from Chuo University studying here now, one exchange student and 20 students studying for the one month spring program.

With Professor Hayashida studying on his sabbatical, and having research partnerships and workshop plans, I believe that this is a wonderful collaboration and the most productive one that I have seen. This collaboration is certainly enhanced by the opening of the new Pacific office.

I would like to congratulate and welcome you to our soil in this great three-way partnership that we share with the East West Center as well.

I see many future great collaborations and I want to welcome all the students here who are visiting here. I hope you enjoy your time here and learn much from the University of Hawai’i.

I did not realize until today the enormous impact of Chuo University with your great alumni who are making such a huge impact in Hawai’i.

Ultimately that is the most important thing that we all do for our connectivity and partnership.

本日は、イースト・ウエスト・センターにおける中央大学パシフィックオフィスの開所式、おめでとうございます。福原学長および関係者の皆さまにお越しいただいたことを歓迎いたします。

私は、ハワイ大学総長に就任した数カ月後の2012年秋に福原学長と合意書に署名したことをよく覚えています。この短期間で多くのやりとりを遂行し、契約にいたったことは本当に喜ばしいことです。

我々は、中央大学で学ぶいくつかのプログラムにおいて、本学の学生を送り出しています。また、現在、本学では、中央大学から交換留学生１名、および1カ月間の春季短期留学プログラムの学生20名を受け入れています。

林田教授が在外研究として本学に滞在し、研究協力およびワークショップを計画していることについては、これまでで私が存じ上げている中で最も生産的で素晴らしいコラボレーションであると思っています。こうしたコラボレーションは、新パシフィックオフィスの開設によって確実に強化されることでしょう。

私は、本学とイースト・ウエスト・センターおよび中央大学の3者による協力関係の構築を喜ばしく思います。将来、多くのコラボレーションが生まれることを確信するとともに、本学を訪れるすべての学生を歓迎いたします。学生の皆さんがハワイ大学での時間を楽しみ、より多くを学んでいただくことを望みます。

私は、ハワイにおいて大きな影響力を持つ中央大学の卒業生がこれほどいることを今日初めて知り、大変感銘を受けました。これこそが、我々のパートナシップのさらなる強化において最も重要なことだと思っています。
